The 7 Best Adjustable Beds, Tested By Our Editors

These beds are versatile, comfortable, and designed to help you sleep better.

Verywell Health / Emily Teel

Adjustable beds look like conventional beds but have electrical components that allow you to adjust the angle and elevation of the head and foot of the bed. Adjusting your sleep position offers better support to the spine's natural curves and thus puts less stress on the back joints, helping reduce back pain, explains Angelie Mascarinas, MD, a physiatrist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Florida. She notes that adjustable beds also benefit those with spinal stenosis and other spine-related issues.

An adjustable bed should offer comfort, durability, and the ability to modify your mattress to your ideal sleeping position. A trial period and warranty are also helpful since choosing the right mattress requires trying it first. To help you make an informed decision, we spent weeks testing adjustable beds in our homes, researching, and speaking with several experts to get input on what to look for. Based on our findings, here are the best adjustable beds we recommend.

The Different Types of Adjustable Beds

Many types of adjustable beds are available, so you need to know what you are looking for before making a purchase. Here are the most common types to consider:

  • Adjustable base only: You can attach your current mattress to an adjustable base. While adjustable bases aren't compatible with every mattress, it is a cost-effective way to experience versatility.
  • Adjustable mattress only: These mattresses use air chambers or foam layers to adjust the firmness level of the bed electronically. However, they can't incline or decline like an adjustable base can. You must pair it with a compatible adjustable base to enjoy position changes and customizable firmness settings.
  • Adjustable base and mattress combo: A combo includes an adjustable base and mattress designed to work together. It can be the most expensive option because you’re replacing the entire bed.
  • Split-king: These come in separate pieces resembling two twin XL beds. When placed side-by-side, they make a king-size bed. Split beds are ideal for couples who prefer different sleep positions or have varying preferences for firmness and positions.
  • Single-base: One base controls the entire bed, making it an excellent option for solo sleepers or couples with similar sleeping styles.

We researched dozens of adjustable bed frames and evaluated them for available sizes, shipping speed, pricing, additional features, customer service, and return policies to find the best adjustable beds on the market today. A sleep and internal medicine physician from our Medical Expert Board also reviewed the information in this article for accuracy surrounding the potential for symptom relief.

Type: Adjustable base and mattress combo | Sizes: Twin XL, full, queen, king, split king | Trial Period: 100-night | Warranty: 10 years

Why We Recommend It

The Lucid L300 Adjustable Bed Base + Mattress stands out for many reasons. When testing, the mattress inflated within 24 hours of arrival, and the adjustable base was easy to set up and use. The solid steel frame is durable and quiet, something certified sleep coach Amelia Jerden recommends. We slept better than ever; our sleep tracking app recorded an up to 25% improvement in sleep quality. Our partner also noted less snoring and restlessness throughout the night.

We were still sold eight weeks later. The hybrid memory foam mattress is comfortable and hugs our body in all the right places. The preset and memory positions are perfect for quick adjustments now that we know our preferences. And with the split-king option, we can adjust each side of the bed without disturbing our partner. Plus, the dual USB charging ports on either side of the bed are a convenient bonus.

Keep In Mind

Memory foam retains more heat than other mattress types. Those who dislike memory foam might want to opt for a different adjustable bed and mattress combo. If you try it and decide to return it during the 100-night trial period, be aware that you will need to pay for return shipping.

Key Specs

Type: Adjustable base and mattress combo | Sizes: Twin XL, full, queen, split king | Trial Period: None | Warranty: 5 years

Why We Recommend It

This mattress isn't just cost-effective—it also offers motorized head and foot incline options. The head incline can go up to 58°, and the foot incline goes up to 40°, so you shouldn't have a problem finding a comfortable position. We tested the split king and could adjust each side to suit our needs. Our back pain, snoring, and swelling have all improved thanks to being able to raise our feet and head based on our pain level and swelling.

The frame is minimalistic and sturdy; we put it together without issues. Though the mattress is thin at only eight inches deep, it's a quality coil and memory foam hybrid. It isn't as comfortable as other options on our list, but it offers decent support and motion isolation for the price. We like how the corded remote control stores conveniently on the headboard so we can adjust the bed without fumbling for it in the dark.

Keep In Mind

It's not as deep as we'd like and may not provide the plush comfort some sleepers are looking for, particularly if you’re accustomed to a more supportive bed. It's also worth noting that there isn't a trial period, but you have a 30-day window to request a return if it doesn't meet your needs.

Key Specs

Type: Adjustable base | Sizes: Twin XL, full, queen, king, split king | Trial Period: 365-night | Warranty: 3 years

Why We Recommend It

As the name suggests, the DreamCloud Adjustable Bed Frame is truly a dream. Not only can you adjust the head and foot incline, but the height is also adjustable. This allows you to lower or raise the frame to your desired level, making it easier to get in and out of bed or to accommodate different mattress thicknesses. The sturdy steel frame is easy to set up and has a weight capacity of up to 750 pounds.

It took us about two hours to assemble it, including disassembling our previous bed frame. After a few weeks of trial and error, we found the perfect combination of inclines to prevent our usual tossing and turning. The remote control is straightforward, and we appreciate how the five preset positions can be customized. But our favorite is the anti-snore position, which elevates the head to help open our airways. Other notable features include USB charging ports, zero gravity position for full body support, and under-bed lighting.

Keep In Mind

There's a massage feature with three intensity levels, but it's not very powerful. Also, this adjustable bed frame isn't compatible with coil mattresses. Contact the manufacturer to ensure your mattress works with this adjustable base before purchasing.

Cons
  • Difficult to move and set up

  • Mattress and base don't fit together seamlessly

Key Specs

Type: Adjustable base and mattress combo | Sizes: Twin XL, queen, king, split king | Trial Period: 120-night | Warranty: 25 years

Why We Recommend It

This mattress and adjustable base combo offers a preset zero gravity position that mimics the weightlessness of astronauts in space. It evenly distributes your body weight to help alleviate pressure points and improve circulation. The remote control is user-friendly and has programmable memory positions, so you can easily switch between your favorite settings. Like the DreamCloud, it also offers an anti-snore setting for reducing snoring and acid reflux.

The mattress is a hybrid of gel-infused memory foam and a denser foam core for support, while the frame is made from durable steel. Due to the weight of the base, setup was time-consuming and required two people, but it was well worth the effort. Our snoring and body pain improved almost immediately, and we liked being able to adjust the settings quickly (without disrupting our partner's sleep). Plus, the frame has an impressive 25-year warranty.

Keep In Mind

It's pretty heavy and more challenging to move than we'd like. We weren't fans of the vibration massage feature, which offered little relief. And while this duo is aesthetically pleasing, the mattress didn't conform to the base as we expected. There's a gap between the mattress and base, so it's not as seamless as other options.

  • White glove service may not meet expectations

Key Specs

Type: Adjustable base | Sizes: Twin XL, full, queen, king, split Cal king | Trial Period: 120-night | Warranty: 20 years (limited)

Why We Recommend It

If ease of assembly and set-up are your top priorities, we happily recommend the Serta Motion Perfect. Though the instructions could be clearer, it's one of the most straightforward frames we tested. After attaching the feet and inserting the designated screws, all we had to do was plug in the power cord. After some trial and error, we found the right combination of inclines for both head and feet to relieve our hip pain.

The under-bed lighting is a nice touch, and we appreciate the pre-programmed anti-gravity and anti-snore settings. This model offers vibration massage with varying levels of intensity. But like the DreamCloud and Sven & Son Classic, it didn't provide the relief we hoped for. Despite that, we think this adjustable bed frame is a solid option for those looking for easy setup and customizable positions.

Keep In Mind

The massage feature isn't as powerful as we'd like, and the white glove service (delivery and setup) wasn’t impressive. The technicians seemed rushed and didn't assemble the frame as anticipated (thankfully, it's not difficult to set up on your own).

Key Specs

Type: Adjustable base | Sizes: Twin XL, queen, king, Cal king, split king | Trial Period: 100-night | Warranty: 10 years (limited)

Why We Recommend It

Both the head and foot of this Purple Premium Smart Base move independently, which is great for feeding your baby or finding a comfortable position during pregnancy. There's also a one-touch-flat setting to return to a flat position when mealtime is over. Other presets include zero gravity, anti-snore, and lounge positions, which you can control via the included wireless controller or smartphone using the Purple Smart Base app.

We tested the base with a Purple mattress while nursing and found it a winning combination for comfort and convenience. According to the company, this base fits into most bed frames thanks to the adjustable legs and zero clearance design. There's also a 10-year warranty for defects; however, read the fine print carefully, as different parts of the frame have varying warranty lengths.

Keep In Mind

It’s not our list's most cost-effective option, but if you're already investing in a Purple mattress, the combo is well worth it. We also think the warranty could be more comprehensive.

Key Specs

Type: Adjustable mattress | Sizes: Twin XL, full, queen, king, split king, Cal king, split Cal king, upper-flex queen, upper-flex king | Trial Period: 365-night | Warranty: Lifetime (limited)

Why We Recommend It

With the touch of a button, the Saatva Solaire Mattress allows you to adjust the firmness to your desired level across 50 different settings. For queen-sized and larger, each side works independently, so you and your partner can choose different firmness levels based on your body's needs. Six different eco-friendly components within the mattress allow for this customizable experience (top to bottom): a breathable pillow top, natural latex lumbar support, cooling gel foam, moisture-wicking core, air chamber, and durable base.

Our experience was top-notch from the moment it arrived. The free white glove delivery service includes setup and old mattress removal. If you're unsure which type of bed (soft, medium, or firm) is best for your sleep preferences, this adjustable mattress is a great investment. That said, we'd say it leans toward medium-firm, even on lower levels. Since firmness is subjective, we encourage you to take advantage of the 365-night trial period to decide if it's right for you.

Keep In Mind

This mattress does not come with an adjustable base. Saatva recommends pairing the upper-flex queen or upper-flex king mattress with the Adjustable Base Plus (sold separately) for a full range of motion. Our only other qualms are the mattress's weight (135 pounds for a king) and the $99 return fee during the 365-day trial period.

How We Tested the Adjustable Beds

Our team of experts tested 10 top-rated adjustable beds in our homes over two months to mimic how our readers would use them in everyday life. We assessed each model over five attributes to determine the best overall and in the following categories:

  • Ease of setup: While setting up each bed, we noted the number of pieces involved, the clarity of the instructions, whether any tools were required or included, and if it could be assembled on your own or if you need assistance.
  • Comfort: Through an eight-week testing period, we evaluated the quality of sleep and support during activities like reading and watching TV and for health-related scenarios like nursing, snoring, and chronic pain.
  • Performance: We tested each bed's range of motion, speed, noise levels, and remote control functionality. We also reviewed any additional features and preset options, like zero gravity, anti-snore, and massage.
  • Design: We evaluated each bed's aesthetics and compatibility with different mattress types, bed frames, and room decor. We also took note of the material quality, durability, and construction.
  • Value: After testing the mattresses for several weeks, we analyzed their price point to determine whether the price tag matched the features and performance.

Do You Need a Special Mattress for an Adjustable Bed?

You don't necessarily need a special mattress for an adjustable bed, but not all mattresses are compatible. Traditional innerspring and memory foam mattresses may not be flexible enough to bend with the adjustable base, potentially damaging the mattress over time. We recommend choosing a hybrid or latex mattress with a flexible coil system and responsive materials, ideally designed specifically for adjustable bed frames. Check with the manufacturer if you're unsure if your current mattress is compatible.

Benefits of Adjustable Beds

Adjustable beds can provide a range of benefits, depending on your goals.

  • Enhanced comfort: Adjustable beds allow for ergonomic positions that reduce strain on the neck and back while reading, watching TV, using a laptop, or eating in bed.
  • Reduced pain: The customization options can alleviate discomfort from back pain, arthritis, and other painful conditions. According to Ali H. Mesiwala MD, adjustable beds are ideal for those with neurological deficits, such as a stroke or spinal cord injury, because they minimize the risk of pressure sores.
  • Improved circulation: Elevating the legs can significantly benefit those experiencing swelling due to conditions like peripheral edema, varicose veins, and during pregnancy.
  • Sleep apnea relief: Elevating the upper body can open airways, providing significant relief of sleep apnea (a condition that can interrupt breathing during sleep) symptoms. Elevation reduces the likelihood of airway obstruction during sleep, a common cause of snoring and sleep apnea episodes.
  • Acid reflux mitigation: Acid reflux, or GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) symptoms include heartburn, chest pain, and difficulty swallowing. Sleep often worsens these symptoms, but elevating the head of the bed can help. Gravity helps keep stomach acid in the stomach rather than allowing it to flow back up into the esophagus and throat.
  • Enhanced independence: By raising or lowering both the head and foot of the bed, you can adjust the bed to a height that reduces the effort required to stand up or lie down. This could be especially beneficial for anyone facing mobility challenges.
  • Fall prevention: While it's not a substitute for proper safety measures, an adjustable bed can make getting in and out of bed easier, reducing the risk of falls. It also allows easy transfer to and from a wheelchair or mobility aid.
