My philosophy of care is that every patient's journey through their cancer is different, and, as providers, it is our responsibility to give them the best guidance through this process. Having the privilege of playing a major role in that journey is the most rewarding aspect of my job.
Oliver Eng, MD, FACS, is an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of California, Irvine. He is a double board-certified surgeon and surgical oncologist. He focuses on treating cancers in the abdomen, particularly cancers that have spread to the peritoneum, the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity. He specializes in complex cytoreductive surgery and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). HIPEC entails delivering high-dose heated chemotherapy in the operating room after surgical removal of visible disease and is effective in different types of cancers. Before joining UCI, Dr. Eng was an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Chicago. He helped lead one of the most robust peritoneal surface malignancy programs in the country.
Dr. Eng has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts in journals, including Cancer Discovery, Cancer, British Journal of Cancer, and JAMA Surgery. He has received both extramural and intramural funding for his research, which centers on understanding the molecular and immunologic characteristics of peritoneal tumors. His research aims to develop innovative therapies for metastatic disease and optimize outcomes and care in cancer patients. He has presented his work nationally and internationally, and he has served as a principal investigator or co-investigator on multiple clinical trials. Dr. Eng serves on the editorial board for various scientific journals and several national committees.
Dr. Eng graduated from Brown University and attended Rutgers University - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he also completed his general surgery residency. He completed a fellowship in complex general surgical oncology at City of Hope National Medical Center in California.
