Highlights

The best doctor-patient relationship is a partnership where we decide together on the most appropriate options. An educated patient is a better partner in their health care. By using resources like Verywell, patients are invested in decisions and are more likely to stay with their treatment plan.

Experience

Scott J. Zashin, MD, FACP, FACR, has a private rheumatology practice in Dallas and was a volunteer clinical professor of internal medicine in the Division of Rheumatology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School Dallas in Texas for over 20 years. There, he learned that there are patients interested in traditional treatment options, alternative treatment options, and a combination of both. As alternative treatments are not typically part of the standard medical school curriculum, he felt it was important to learn about these therapies. Often, it was the patient themselves who introduced him to these treatments. Through this exposure, he was able to pass on information to others. He has tried to educate health professionals and patients through journal and book publications.

Dr. Zashin is a fellow of the American College of Physicians in both internal medicine and rheumatology, voted among the "Super Doctors" in Texas Monthly, "Best Doctors in Dallas" in D-Magazine, and won a Patient's Choice Award on Vitals.com. In addition, Dr. Zashin was ranked as one of America's Top Doctors by the US News and World Report and a Top 10 influential expert for web traffic by a Sharecare Survey.

In addition to utilizing newer medical treatments that have dramatically improved the lives of many of his patients, he has also had experience with natural treatments and other therapies not routinely used by other rheumatologists. As a result, he never automatically dismisses the potential benefit of an alternative treatment. In all cases, he works with patients to develop the best treatment plan for their condition. His goal for every patient is to identify the safest and most effective therapy to reduce pain, increase function, and improve the quality of life for his patients.

Education

Dr. Zashin graduated from Dartmouth College and Dartmouth Medical School. He did his internal medicine residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School as well as his rheumatology fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.
