We’ve experienced a lot in the last two years of the global COVID-19 pandemic, including a lockdown, constant masking, and social distancing. And while many of the steps we took were in the name of health, other aspects of our health may have suffered.
For example, preventive cancer screenings—like mammograms—experienced a decline during the height of the pandemic, and dental visits were lower on average than in previous years. We also moved our bodies less: an observational study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine noted that overall step counts decreased significantly worldwide.
Because the pandemic impacted our health profoundly and increased the need for health information, we decided to dedicate our first digital issue to getting our preventive health back on track. Our inaugural issue examines preventive cancer screenings, dental visits, routine vaccinations, alcohol consumption, exercise, and more. In addition to in-depth coverage and first-hand stories, we also highlight the experiences of our frontline healthcare workers.
To bring to life this fantastic issue’s theme, we are thrilled to have television personality, comedian, and author Jonathan Van Ness share their experience with the pandemic along with their preventive health journey, which can be an inspiration to us all. Their message, and all the articles in this digital issue, highlight the core of Verywell's mission—to empower you to take a proactive role in your health. Now is a good time to take that control and we are here to point you and support you in the direction of health and happiness.
