After completing a double residency in Otolaryngology and Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, William Truswell, MD, FACS, started a practice in Western Massachusetts for these overlapping specialties 40 years ago. For the last 25 years, his practice has been limited to cosmetic and reconstructive facial surgery. He was the first in this area to have an accredited private office surgical suite.
Active for many years in the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Truswell served as its President from 2017 to 2018 and continues to serve on its Board of Directors as Immediate Past President. He is currently president of the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is sought world over to lecture and teach at conferences in his field. He has taught and operated in 12 countries around the world. Dr. Truswell is board-certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (ABOHNS) and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS).
As a facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Truswell has repaired significant facial injuries from motor vehicle accidents to other sustained trauma, performed resections of advanced head and neck cancer with appropriate reconstruction, and for the last 25 years mostly facial cosmetic surgery. As a facial plastic surgeon, he has removed countless skin lesions including over 1,000 skin cancers of the face with flap or grafting reconstruction.
Dr. Truswell has authored and/or edited three textbooks: Surgical Rejuvenation – a Road Map to Safe and Reliable Outcomes, Lasers and Light, Peels and Abrasions – Techniques and Applications, and Everyday Challenges in Facial Plastic Surgery, four books for the public on facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, and contributed many articles to journals and chapters to textbooks in his field.
Dr. Truswell did his undergraduate studies at Hobart College, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree with Honors in Chemistry in 1968. He received his Doctor of Medicine in 1972 from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
Following his general surgical residency training in Syracuse, New York, Dr. Truswell did a double residency in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.
He received his board certification from the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 1991 with Maintenance of Certification in 2007, and the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery in 1976.
